First Nations Technical Institute in Jeopardy
In 1985 the First Nations Technical Institute, an aboriginal owned and controlled post-secondary academy, was created by the federal Department of Indian Affairs, the provincial Ministry of Education and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Council. The Institute offers university, college and adult education programs with courses on a wide variety of subjects. Graduates of the Institute, with a 90% employment rate, are role models in their communities. The successes may come to an end this year if the federal government follows through on its plan to cut the school’s funding by 66%.
