Why a human rights-based approach

Share

Share on LinkedIn Share on Facebook

A human rights-based approach to poverty puts people first. It begins from the premise that every person is equal in rights and dignity, with the fundamental human right to an adequate standard of living.

In our work to eliminate poverty, we examine the systems that create poverty and advance solutions for strengthening those systems. We call on every level of government to live up to their duty to respect, protect, and fulfill our human rights. We measure success by the impact that systems-level decisions have on people’s daily lives.

Moving from theory to implementation on human rights and poverty

  • Elizabeth McIsaac

Using a human rights approach means reconceptualizing what our systems do, what they aim for, and who they serve. It is the ultimate in systems change. Elizabeth McIsaac, president of Maytree, reflects on the foundation’s work and role in implementing a human rights approach to poverty.

From storytelling to rights-based participation

  • Elizabeth McIsaac
March 24, 2023

Meaningful participation is key to a human rights-based approach. Storytelling is a start, but it is only one side of the process. We need to think deeply about how we receive those stories, incorporate people’s expertise into decision-making, and build relationships.

Why front-line workers need policy training, and policy needs front-line workers

  • Diana Chan McNally

The real world is messy. Many of us are knee-deep, or even drowning, in that messiness. If the policy world is serious about generating relevant solutions to complex issues, isn’t it time that it met us at our level and got a bit messy, too?
