This paper describes the Alternatives Program and other services provided by the Agincourt Community Services Association in Scarborough. The author describes how activities and projects such as a Cooking Club, community garden, Good Food Box and educational workshops help raise awareness in the local community about alternative methods of ensuring food security for low-income residents. The purpose of these initiatives is to reduce reliance on emergency food services, such as food banks, and to promote more sustainable practices, such as how to grow and preserve food. The overall goal of the Alternatives Program is to encourage the self-sufficiency of low-income residents and, ultimately, to reduce poverty. Alternatives Program activities encourage self-sufficiency, which is the first step to exiting poverty.
