Caring for the Caregivers
Published on January 8, 2009

This commentary was prepared in recognition of January as Alzheimer Awareness Month. It is drawn from the research in a report entitled Caregivers and Dementia published by the Caledon Institute in 2008. Caregivers assist individuals with a wide range of conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Caregiving involves a range of tasks related to physical caregiving, emotional support, and legal and financial matters. In a world in which education, training and support are in place for virtually every position this commentary asks how have we managed to overlook the need for ongoing information, personalized instruction and continual upgrading for caregivers.
