Culture and Recreation: Links to Well-Being

Published on 30/04/2004

This paper explores the importance of culture and recreation for the health and well-being of individuals and communities.  It is the eighth in a series of papers written in support of the Vibrant Communities project. Evidence from a variety of fields points to the wide-ranging benefits, in terms of health and well-being, skills development, social capital and economic strength, from investment in these areas.  The paper concludes that culture and recreation are essential social amenities – or key elements of social infrastructure – that add significant value to cities and communities.
