Evidence from a variety of fields points to the wide-ranging benefits, in terms of health and well-being, skills development, social capital and economic strength, from investment in these areas. The paper concludes that culture and recreation are essential social amenities – or key elements of social infrastructure – that add significant value to cities and communities.
