Enviroworks
Enviroworks is a Used Building Materials Store owned by the Limestone District School Board in Kingston, Ontario and is operated by students in the Board. It is an example of a highly successful community economic development venture focussed on the environment. Students learn about managing a business by actually running the enterprise. Courses in Marketing, Accounting, Computers and Entrepreneurial Studies are held in the store”s boardroom and are taught in a practical, “hands-on” manner. The primary goal of the business is to divert as much construction and demolition waste as possible from Kingston”s landfills. Enviroworks obtains materials such as doors, windows, bathtubs and sinks from households and contractors who are disposing of them and sells them back to people who can reuse them. By working with local businesses and organizations, Enviroworks diverts more than 70 tonnes of materials from local landfill sites every year.
