Hamilton’s Hostels to Homes Project
Published on March 29, 2010
Community organizers in Hamilton had long advocated for a new funding formula for emergency shelters and, in the summer of 2006, were invited to participate in a two-phase pilot project to test the validity of their system transformation ideas. As a result of the project and a subsequent Homelessness Blueprint, 55 emergency shelter beds will be permanently closed in July 2010; another 50 will close in 2011. Find out how Hamilton used community partnerships and new approaches to help chronic male shelter users move into stable housing.
