On April 5, 2001, the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton, Ontario sponsored a conference titled “Building a Winning Community: Visions and Challenges for the New City of Hamilton.” The conference brought together community leaders from diverse sectors local government, business, education and nonprofit organizations to consider how they might work together to achieve the full potential of the newly amalgamated city. Ken Battle and Eric Leviten opened the conference by presenting a conceptual framework for thinking about the role of partnerships in building communities. Notes from this address are provided below.
