Parents in Action for Education, Montreal
Launched in 1999 by a community development organization in Montreal known as the Third Avenue Resource Centre, People in Action for Education offers support and information for parents from socially marginalized backgrounds who wish to become more fully involved in their children’s education. This article describes how, in responding to community members seeking direction, PAE has worked to develop communications networks in three inner-city neighbourhoods in downtown Montreal. Recent changes to the education system in Quebec have seen user fees climb to $300 per student. This and other issues have galvanized parents to become involved with PAE in order to learn more about the education system and their ability to influence decisions. The article further describes the particular challenges which these parents face to address in their efforts to become effective partners in their children’s education.
