Seniors Beware: This Review’s For You Too
This paper notes the problems related to the exclusion of seniors’ concerns from the Social Security Review. The issues of training and upgrading, adjustment programs for older workers and nonstandard employment have important implications for workers’ ability to save for their retirement. Certain costly government expenditures – such as high tax breaks for RRSP contributions – cannot be included in the Review because they are part of the seniors’ agenda, which will be examined later. Many services that seniors require to live independently may be affected by the Social Security Review. Possible financing changes under the Canada Assistance Plan could result in cuts or modifications to personal supports. While seniors may be seriously affected, most are not aware of – let alone involved in the debate about – possible changes to these services.
