Sound-Bite Policy

The search for new ideas is on in Ottawa as federal parties gear up for the next election. Proposed initiatives typically take the form of individual disparate measures – or policy ‘sound bites.’ But the complex challenges that Canada faces, including persistent poverty and growing inequality, a rapidly aging population, the exclusion of racialized youth, the marginalization of Aboriginal Canadians and serious imbalance in local government fiscal capacity relative to responsibility, need more than sound-bite measures. They require multifaceted responses, involving different sectors and actions, which can tackle more effectively these complex challenges.
