The Critical Human Factor: Mentoring Our Young People
This commentary makes the case for mentoring the pairing of an individual with a ‘significant other’ who takes an interest in that individual and who provides personal and professional guidance. The paper discusses the history of mentoring and the role that it used to play in society in easing the transition from childhood to adulthood. Various models of mentoring are described. The paper then sets out the factors that contribute to the success of mentoring programs as well as the barriers to the widespread application of these programs. Given research results which suggest that a close and sustained personal relationship with a caring adult have a positive impact upon young people, the author argues the need to reintroduce mentoring to our culture.
