The Lessons of Walkerton Run Deep
Published on September 1, 2000
This commentary points out what can happen when society downplays or neglects the public infrastructure that has an impact on our health and safety. Walkerton is a tragic but instructive wake-up call. It is a lesson in the importance of the ‘public good’ – actions taken in the interests of all citizens. The public good also refers to social concerns that compose the lifeblood of our well-being. Health care, education, income security and early childhood development are examples. We ignore the need to invest in public and social infrastructure at our peril.
