The Lessons of Walkerton Run Deep
Published on 01/09/2000
This commentary points out what can happen when society downplays or neglects the public infrastructure that has an impact on our health and safety. Walkerton is a tragic but instructie wake-up call. It is a lesson in the importance of the ‘public good’ – actions taken in the interests of all citizens. The public good also refers to social concerns that compose the lifeblood of our well-being. Health care, education, income security and early childhood development are examples. We ignore the need to invest in public and social infrastructure at our peril.
