The Management and Regulation of Occupational Pension Plans in Canada
Published on December 20, 2006
Occupational pension plans – often referred to in Canada as employer-sponsored, workplace or registered pension plans – play a critical role in ensuring the income security of Canadian seniors. This paper, one of several that Caledon will publish on pensions in Canada, examines the management and regulation of occupational plans. It summarizes the key aspects of the federal and provincial pension benefit laws regarding the administration, funding and investment of such plans. It also examines the financial difficulties that many plans have encountered in recent years, the root causes of those difficulties, and some of the solutions that have been proposed.
