Conflict is part of life in any community and knowing how to deal with it is vital to its health. Low-income communities typically have few options for dealing with conflict other than the legal system. Composed primarily of volunteers, the Coalition’s approach involves working with local organizations to train community members to take responsibility for managing conflict. The paper describes the mediation and conciliation services offered by the Coalition which have successfully promoted a multicultural, collaborative approach to community-based conflict resolution.
