Published on June 1, 1999
The Roots of Empathy is a classroom-based parenting program designed for elementary school students. The program has as its cornerstone a monthly classroom visit by an infant and parent. The goals of Roots of Empathy are to increase levels of empathy in children by developing an appreciation and understanding of human development. Empathy and a knowledge of child development are two key determinants of effective parenting. The program fosters problem-solving skills, and oral language and communication skills while introducing activities which complement the classroom curriculum. The program also has a long-term goal of preparing children for competent and caring parenting.
