Health Care/Caring for Health

The next federal Budget is expected to focus on health care. Ottawa has to redress some of the damage created through cuts to social programs introduced as part of the Canada Health and Social Transfer (CHST). But health involves far more than medical treatment. A healthy society is guided by the principles of environmental sustainability and economic justice. The federal government appears to have retreated from many of its environmental commitments. On the economic front, Canada’s poverty rate is high and has been rising over the past few years. A federal Budget focussed on health not only should begin to restore transfers to health care, it also should renew its commitments to the environment and to poverty reduction – both key to ensuring health.
