Seeds of Promise: Grandview/?Uuqinak’uuh School in Vancouver

This article profiles the steps taken to revitalize an inner-city elementary school community in Vancouver”s east end. A 1997 family crisis became the impetus for change, allowing school staff to prioritize goals for improving student performance and helping community members to identify and act upon their needs and interests. The school principal and an Inner City Project teacher were key players in the revitalization efforts. Between them, they raised more than $700,000 in cash and in-kind donations, and they attracted skilled volunteers to help redesign the school”s yard. The article reviews the projects completed and explores the role of the private and public sectors in helping inner-city children achieve educational and personal success.
