Published on June 1, 1998
In 1996-97, the federal government spent $12 million on public polls and focus groups to seek opinions on its performance. The new public “pollicy, which relies so much on opinion polls for guidance, comes at a time when many social problems already have been identified as crucial areas for investment. Among the top ten areas are: child benefits, child care, early childhood development, medicare financing, home care, respite for caregivers, supports for persons with disabilities, Employment Insurance coverage, tax relief for low- and modest-income households and community investment.
